Old Home Day Swanzey, NH - 7/16/11
Fenton Family Dealerships is proud to announce their sponsorship of Old Home Day in Swanzey NH.  This is a fun filled day with lots of tours and demonstrations, last years even had a very big turnout

Last year extra early risers were greeted by the eerie spectacle of two airplanes taxiing through the ground fog on Old Homestead Highway, heading towards the Monadnock Regional High School parking lot. Hours later, fire engines and rescue vehicles, antique cars and excavation equipment filled the lot. The theme of transportation continued throughout the day with Roaming Railroad train rides, pony rides, and an impromptu saddleback ox riding demonstration. Unexpected windy conditions canceled a planned hot air balloon.

By 10:00, the parade was moving north on Old Homestead Highway. Marching bands, decorated bicycles, politicians, horses and oxen, police and fire vehicles, go-karts, and citizen groups of all kinds promenaded past the reviewing stand.  Immediately following the parade, a stirring street beat led a procession to the intersection of Sawyers Crossing and Old Homestead Highway and the unveiling of the new "Welcome to Swanzey" sign. A masterwork by Swanzey artist Deb Crowder, the sign immortalizes Swanzey's ambassadors of open space protection, the oxen Buck and Ike.

Other scheduled activities included an exhibition by the award-winning Northern Lights cheerleaders, a police K-9 unit demonstration, a dog agility demonstration, and a martial arts demonstration. The bicycle tour of Swanzey's covered bridges was a popular choice, as was the hike to the summit of Mt. Caesar. Other activities affiliated with Old Home Day included Mt. Caesar Library's annual book sale and a flea market and bake sale at Swanzey Congregational Church.

For the pleasure of historians, the 6th NH Volunteers (c.1861) were camped near Town Hall, and periodically re-enacted mustering, drilling and firing. A walking tour of Mt Caesar Cemetery revealed the history of Swanzey and some of its families.

After entering their decorated bicycles in the post-parade contest, children were occupied with lawn games and races, a cupcake walk and pie eating contest, kite flying and face painting.
People of all ages enjoyed cheering for their favorites at the Swanzey Police versus Fire Department softball game. The Fire Department's chicken barbeque was a popular destination, but only one of many choices for the hungry. Over sixty vendors offered wares ranging from hand-carved wood to handmade soap, unique food items, art and more.

A non-stop lineup of music added to the day's festivities, and continued into the evening as theatre-goers assembled for the 69th revival of Denman Thompson's "The Old Homestead."  Laughter and applause filled the Potash Bowl, as the cast put on one of its finest performances yet.

Old Home Day Committee members Kathy Habiby, Jane Johnson and Bill Carson will modestly tell you they had a lot of help to make the day such a rousing success. Maybe so, but they inspired our help with their great ideas and infectious enthusiasm. Already people in the community eagerly anticipate next year's Old Home Day. With Kathy, Jane and Bill as party planners, it will be another event not to be missed.
