2011 Veracruz

THE 2011 VERACRUZ!

POWERFUL YET THOUGHTFUL

The Hyundai Veracruz's 3.8-liter V6 engine outputs 260 horsepower
and 257 pound-feet of torque. Constructed with an aluminum block
and heads, it boasts an excellent power-to-weight ratio while
delivering less idle and vibration. It's paired with a smooth
six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®.

AS SAFE AS IT IS LUXURIOUS
At Hyundai, safety never takes a backseat to luxury. The Veracruz, an IIHS Top Safety Pick*,
includes uncompromising standard safety features like six airbags*, Electronic Stability
Control with Traction Control System*, ABS, and active front head restraints.

EXTERIOR

NOT JUST ANOTHER PRETTY FACE

The Veracruz's exterior is an elegant commingling of aesthetics
and technology, reflecting one of our engineers' most closely held credos:
make it beautiful, but also make it useful.

So the Veracruz's silhouette, head turning as it is, nevertheless possesses
a scant 0.35 drag coefficient, meaning reduced wind noise and improved fuel
economy compared to less streamlined vehicles.

The convenient roof rack and dual power heated side mirrors? Also sculpted
to be aerodynamically benign and produce as little wind noise as possible.

Then there's the high-tensile steel unibody girding that sheet metal.

As you drive, your vehicle's frame tends to twist back and forth. If it flexes too much, the ride can become
jarring and noisy. Torsional rigidity is a frame's resistance to that twisting. The Veracruz's frame is
suitably stiff, delivering a smoother, quieter ride with more precise handling and steering.

Not even the windshield of the Veracruz has escaped the attention of our ever-analytical engineers. It's
constructed of solar glass that repels UV radiation, which helps keep the interior cooler on brutal sun-baked days.

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE MICROSCOPE
An ongoing debate at our design center is, which is more attractive,
the Veracruz's exterior or the engineering underneath?

Truth is, they go hand in hand.
Early prototypes of the Veracruz not only had to please the eye, they
had to withstand test-drives of over 100,000 miles, through some of the
ugliest conditions on the planet. Then we disassembled the cars and
inspected their parts under a microscope, looking for insights that
could enhance quality or reliability.

Or consider the Veracruz's body panels. As sleek and seemingly perfect
as they are, we still take the extra step of scanning them with lasers
calibrated to detect variances of less than a millimeter. If gaps are too
wide-thus causing excessive wind noise-or there are any other
aberrations in alignment, we'll find and fix them.

 A PAINT JOB BEYOND COMPARE
The toughest part of a Veracruz may well be its eye-catching
paint job. Far from being merely decorative, it actually increases
durability-repelling sun, snow, and rain-while reducing corrosion.

During manufacturing, its unibody is electrically charged and
immersed in a bath of primer with an opposing electrical charge.
Opposites attract, as the adage goes, and the chemical
reaction pulls primer into even the tiniest nooks and hidden
surfaces, resulting in a peerless, long-term resistance
to corrosion. Such painstaking care then allows the
following coats of paint to bond as tightly as possible,
creating a luminous, chip-resistant surface. It takes
significantly more time to do it this way, but then,
doesn't anything that's worth doing well?

INTERIOR

YOUR THIRD PLACE
The Veracruz Limited is a private oasis-a third place between home and office that pampers driver and passengers alike with its
sumptuous interior and peaceful, refined ride. There are technical reasons for this, of course. Things like a reinforced dash panel,
four layers of insulation underneath the carpeting, and an electronic motor mount that effectively minimizes engine noise
and vibration in the cabin. These all help make the Veracruz quieter.

Yet the real tranquility you experience in a Veracruz Limited comes from
far smaller details. The leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob,
for instance, that feel so reassuring in the hand. The easy-to-reach
controls and storage
areas that are an ergonomic delight.
The plush heated front seats.

In fact, sitting in one of those seats for the first time presents
you with another pleasant surprise: space. Lots of it.

The Veracruz offers generous head room and 150-plus cubic
feet of total interio
r volume-more than the Mercedes GL-yet
its total length is ten inches shorter. That tidier length helps give
the Veracruz a smaller than normal turning diameter: a mere
36.7 feet. The immense convenience of this quickly becomes
apparent when sighting a free parking spot on the other side of
the street.

Your passengers are well looked after, too. They get their own
second-row climate control, second-row reading lights,
and an available DVD entertainment system
(complete
with wireless headphones) that makes movies so vivid that
cries of "Are we there yet?" simply cease.

Should you tire of the silence, an available audiophile-quality ten-speaker Infinity®
AM/FM/CD/MP3/XM®
surround sound audio system is but the press of a button away.
Those speakers feature titanium-laminated drivers, which reduce distortion to nearly
unmeasurable levels, and, along with the LOGIC7 surround sound circuitry,
reproduce sound with jaw-dropping fidelity.

Another thoughtful luxury you might consider is an available
Bluetooth® hands-free phone system.

The only thing missing? An enormous price tag.

A CAR THAT RECOGNIZES AND REMEMBERS YOU
Some cars just make you feel, well, welcome. The Veracruz is one of them.

The available eight-way power driver seat is wonderfully compliant and additively
comfortable. It's also connected to an intelligent Integrated Memory System that
remembers precisely how you (and a second driver) like your mirrors, seat, and
steering wheel positioned. For once, your car conforms to you.

The proximity key senses when you approach and unlocks the doors when
you touch a button on the door handle.

Like so many aspects of the Veracruz, it's a little luxury that quickly
becomes a necessity.

FIRST LAW OF LUXURY: NEVER ANTAGONIZE THE DRIVER

Is a luxury car truly luxurious if its technologies and features aren't easy to use?

It's a question our engineers took to heart when designing the Veracruz, and why
every feature was thoroughly vetted both for utility as well as user-friendliness.
Technology doesn't get much easier than that. Ditto for the available rearview
mirror. At night, it dims automatically to reduce glare when the headlights
from cars approaching from the rear become too bright.

The USB/iPod® and auxiliary input jacks are just as unfussy.
You plug your iPod in. You turn on the stereo. You hit play. Simple.

Yet the Veracruz's essential usability extends beyond whiz-bang features. It resides in its little pleasures. Every detail, from the placement of buttons and dials to the positioning of vents and handles, has been carefully considered and optimized, informed by the latest thinking in ergonomic research.

SAFETY

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL: WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
"The most important safety feature since seat belts."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calls ESC the single most important safety advancement since the seatbelt.
If widely deployed, it could save 10,000 lives a year.

A SAFER SKELETON
A Veracruz is born different. It takes thousands of precise welds just to construct its frame.
In car terms, welds are like bolts. More welds mean more stiffness and more strength.

That reinforced unibody also features a wide track stance for enhanced stability. It's also
made of high-tensile steel with carefully engineered crumple zones that actually shunt
impact forces around the passenger cell. To that, we add bodyside reinforcements and
hood-buckling creases.

It just makes sense. If we're going to offer a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty,
shouldn't we try to make sure you're around for all of it?

70,896 OUNCES OF PREVENTION
There are 206 bones in the human body. When designing cars, we think about
each and every one. Such careful consideration is, of course, why the Veracruz comes
with six standard airbags, including advanced dual front and front side-impact airbags, as
well as side-curtain airbags that extend completely to the third row. Those front airbags
are also intelligent, that is, they're able to adjust their deployment speed
automatically based on impact speed and seat position.

ELECTRONIC BRAKE FORCE DISTRIBUTION

The brakes deserve special mention, too. The Veracruz's standard ABS is enhanced with
Electronic Brake-force Distribution. Together, they seamlessly vary and adjust brake pressure
to each wheel as necessary to provide maximum braking power during emergency
maneuvers or under slippery road conditions. To that we've added the extra assurance
of Brake Assist, which can sense a panic stop and then automatically apply maximum
braking power to shorten your stopping distance.

PERFORMANCE

THE LATEST THING IN ALUMINUM
3.8-LITER FASHION

The Veracruz serves up luxury of an altogether different sort:
adrenaline. Its robust 3.8-liter V6 engine delivers plenty of
smooth, effortless power, outputting 260 horsepower and
257 pound-feet of torque.

The more technically minded will appreciate the engine's
Continuously Variable Valve Timing, which perfectly times the
intake and exhaust valves to widen the power band and boost
fuel efficiency. They'll also welcome the iridium-tipped spark
plugs used for more efficient combustion and thus improved
acceleration and throttle response.

But even those who are less inclined to peek under the hood
will enjoy the easy acceleration afforded by 24 finely tuned
valves working in harmony, or that the Veracruz produces
less noise, vibration, and harshness. After all, performance,
like all luxuries, is always easy to spot.
HORSEPOWER MATCHED ONLY BY IQ

Muscle without control is counterproductive, so the Veracruz's
engine is mated to a silky smooth six-speed automatic
transmission with SHIFTRONIC®.

It's adaptive, able to adjust to your particular driving habits. If, for
instance, you accelerate rapidly, the transmission takes note and
moves the shift points upward to maximize power and acceleration

It also includes preset shift patterns for specific conditions,
such as uphill or performance driving.

The power steering is also intelligent, providing more assistance
when it's needed, at slower speeds or while parallel parking, say,
and less assistance at highway speeds, where turns are not severe.

Even the wheels have brains. Their highly attuned speed sensors
report constantly to the available all-wheel-drive system,
announcing quickly when it needs to activate.

Considering all this intelligence, it would appear that the
thinking person's crossover is, in fact, a thinking crossover.

A REFINED RIDE
The Veracruz's suspension has been tuned for comfort and quiet
and is compliant in the best possible sense.

The front suspension is an independent MacPherson strut design that
employs coil springs, gas-charged shocks, and a 27-millimeter stabilizer
bar for reduced body roll. The rear features an independent multi-link design.

With the added support of a rigid unibody, they absorb road imperfections
with ease, displaying none of the excessive rolling that can afflict
lesser suspensions in curves.

But mere control is not the suspension's sole reason for being. Along with
the whisper-quiet cabin, it contributes to an all-encompassing feeling of
luxury, confidence, and security, which may not appear on the window
sticker, but is not at all difficult to miss.
