2011 SantaFe

THE CROSSOVER, REALIZED.

Before the SUV came the wagon. Its basic purpose: to carry more cargo than a sedan while using similar amounts of space and natural resources.
The SUV gained popularity in the '90s because it satisfied a desire for increased room and ruggedness, and offered the all-weather security of
four-wheel drive. But as the novelty wore off, drivers missed the maneuverability and efficiency of their cars, and the Crossover Utility Vehicle
was born. The idea: combine all-wheel drive and the increased utility of an SUV with the efficiency and maneuverability of a car.

When setting out to design the Santa Fe, we felt that many crossovers had missed the target. Either they felt too cramped and insubstantial or
were car-like in the way they were constructed but not in how they handled. So we decided early on that the Hyundai Santa Fe would need to be designed to deliver on the balance of strengths the CUV was meant to deliver.

Not that we can take credit for the idea; the Santa Fe is the result of thousands of conversations with consumers. In fact, it was the first
Hyundai vehicle designed in the U.S. specifically for U.S. market. The response the Santa Fe has received from the press and, more
important, its owners, is proof that the extra effort we made did not go unnoticed.

DESIGNED TO DE-STRESS YOU

We presented our interior designers with a formidable challenge: to complement the Santa Fe's upscale exterior styling with an equally impressive
interior. They started by making every effort to ensure the generous technological content was easy to use, then chose materials, colors and
textures you'd expect in a luxury brand. Their overarching goal: that every Santa Fe owner experience a refined and well-equipped vehicle.

MAKING PRACTICAL GRACEFUL

There are plenty of midsize CUVs on the market. Unfortunately, many of them are shaped like a
toolshed and have similar curb appeal. If you're looking for something that looks good and can
meet your needs when running errands, your options are few and far between.

Our designers wanted the Santa Fe to convey a feeling of "assertive grace" and, to inspire their
work, Hyundai even commissioned a speed skating gold medalist to demonstrate the essence
of speed, motion, power and refinement. The result is a body design that is aerodynamic but
not anonymous, and space efficient but not slab-sided.

AS GOOD AT AVOIDING ACCIDENTS AS IT IS AT SURVIVING THEM

It's true that when it comes to crashes, weight is an advantage. But you can't rely on weight alone
for protection, and oftentimes that added heft increases stopping distances and makes for clumsy
handling - the last thing you need when trying to avoid an accident.

The Hyundai Santa Fe's no featherweight, and features like its six standard airbags and active
front head restraints give it the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's vaunted "Top Safety Pick.
"It also earned five-star crash-test ratings in front- and side-impact tests for three years in a row.
But its standard Electronic Stability Control, tidy handling, and intelligent braking systems help
prevent you from having to rely on its brute strength alone.

THINK OF IT AS A TRIATHLETE

Some might say that performance isn't important in a family vehicle. Those people likely haven't driven
a vehicle loaded with passengers and cargo at high altitudes or into the passing lane on a two-lane
road. It's at moments like these that performance becomes an essential rather than a luxury.

The Santa Fe includes beefed up chassis hardware that can manage the higher loads and forces the
Santa Fe might face when venturing off-pavement or towing a trailer. And besides, when you're
alone in your crossover, what's wrong with having a little fun?

EXTERIOR

REVERSE ENGINEERING

The Santa Fe's tailgate area is full of thoughtful features designed to increase convenience.

It starts with a generously sized and intuitive right-mounted handle to open the tailgate. It's
a feature Santa Fe owners told us they appreciate, and once you use it you'll understand
why our engineers chose it over other designs.

The bumper itself features a textured covering to guard against paint damage. It's a feature
that other car companies typically place in their accessory catalogs and charge extra for.

The details increase safety as well. Large reflectors placed in the bumper increase your safety while loading the vehicle at night, while LED's
(SE and Limited) in the center-mounted brake light illuminate faster than conventional bulbs to maximize the reaction time of those behind you.

So many reasons to appreciate the Santa Fe's tailgate, not to mention how great it is for tailgating.

ENGINEERED TO EXCEED EXPECTATIONS

At Hyundai, every designer and engineer works to a standard that we call "A Class Above."
It's a simple phrase that serves as a constant reminder that designing and building a great
car means going above and beyond what's expected. It means including a surprising
number of standard features, and adding safety features long before the government
asks us to. It means building a car that can be compared not just to its direct
competitors but to cars with a higher price tag or a fancier pedigree.

You'll notice this philosophy in every part of the Santa Fe. See one driving down the road,
and the clean, modern design will make you do a double-take. Wash one by hand and
you'll admire the tight gaps between panels and the complex forms in the sheet metal.
Drive one and the Santa Fe will raise your expectations of what an
affordable midsize CUV - and what a Hyundai - can be.

QUALITY AT EVERY STEP

The Santa Fe was the first Hyundai vehicle to be styled at our Design Center in
Irvine, California. The designers, model makers, and technicians at our $30
million facility gave the Santa Fe clean, timeless lines that are bound to
look as contemporary years from now as they do today.

Of course, timeless design wouldn't matter much if the Santa Fe wasn't engineered
to last. At our Design and Engineering Center just east of Ann Arbor and at our Proving
Grounds in California's Mojave Desert, the focus is on quality, and the Santa Fe is put
through a barrage of tests to ensure it can withstand extreme temperatures, severe
weather and a range of road surfaces.

And once the Santa Fe passes muster there, it's up to the workers at our assembly plant in Montgomery, Alabama, to painstakingly build the
Santa Fe to our engineers' exacting specifications. Thanks to our confidence in every Hyundai employee at every stage of the process, we're
able to offer America's Best Warranty. So, here's to design that lasts, engineering that lasts, and quality that lasts. Here's to the Santa Fe.

INTERIOR

FRESH YET FAMILIAR

The highest compliment you can pay one of our interior designers doesn't sound like a compliment at all: If they've done their job well, it's what you don't
notice that's remarkable. When you experience the Santa Fe, you'll appreciate the sound design principles that help you stay focused over the long haul.

Radio and ventilation controls are placed high on the dashboard, the buttons and knobs are generously sized and clearly marked. The gear shifter and
steering-wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls are conveniently located so you can operate them by touch alone. Even the cupholders are
illuminated in a soft blue glow at night to highlight their location. All of these parts have one goal: to all but eliminate the need to look away
from the road to operate the car, making for a more relaxing and less distracted drive.

Our engineers border on obsessive: For 2011 the Santa Fe gets a larger radio display
and a new style of sunroof switch, both easier to use than ever before.

The only thing missing? An enormous price tag.

COMFORT IS IN THE DETAILS

Like every Hyundai, the Santa Fe aims to compete a class above what its size or price
might suggest. The result is a crossover that's in a class of its own.

Notice the standard vents placed just ahead of the rear doors. Most cars don't include anything other
than floor-level vents for the rear passengers, typically found at the rear of the center console. But the
Santa Fe's vents, like those in top-level luxury cars, direct the air where it's needed rather than
at the center-passenger's legs.

Another ventilation standout: eight fan speeds rather than the usual three or four. Why? Because when you've got
only three or four to choose from, it invariably feels like a battle between too little air and too much. Plus,
Limited's fully automatic temperature control includes a CleanAir Ionizer that freshens and cleans the air.

Other high-end touches include a fuel door release that's easily accessed through a cable-operated lever mounted on the floor. The icing on the cake is a built-in trip computer, standard on most models, that calculates your fuel economy, and tells you how far you can go before you'll need to stop for gas.

A BETTER WAY FORWARD.

There are navigation systems and then there are navigation systems you'll enjoy using. The
Santa Fe is available with the latter. A large, high resolution 6.5-inch touch screen is easily
legible, even in strong sunlight. And with XM NavTraffic®, you'll be provided with real-time
traffic updates for your trip. You can use the touch-screen or voice commands to locate over
five million points of interest stored in flash memory for faster access. An address book
feature can hold recently visited locations, marked points, and favorites.

SAFETY

POISE WHERE YOU LEAST EXPECT IT.

Whether you have front-wheel or all-wheel drive, you'll eventually
encounter a surface that makes you wish you had more traction.
And at that moment you'll appreciate the Santa Fe's standard
Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control System.

Optical sensors in the steering system and at each wheel compare
where you want to go with where the car is heading. If a difference
between the two is detected, Electronic Stability Control slows the
appropriate wheel to redirect the car and help keep you on course.
Studies have shown that drivers of SUVs and CUVs equipped with
this system are 67% less likely to lose control of their vehicle and
have an accident.

ESC is backed up by the Traction Control System, which limits power
and applies brakes to individual wheels to reduce the occurrence of
wheelspin, and routes power to the wheel with the most traction.

Together, both systems give the Santa Fe an uncanny assurance in slippery conditions, eliminating much of the white-knuckle apprehension
one typically feels while driving in winter. Also worth mentioning: The same systems are standard on the front-wheel-drive Santa Fe as well, giving
them nearly the same winter traction as all-wheel-drive models.

BRAKES THAT THINK SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO.

The safest car to be in is the one that helps you avoid accidents in the first place.
ABS brakes feature Brake Assist to reduce stopping distances and Electronic
Brake-force Distribution to stabilize the car when heavily loaded or while
cornering. We know you're likely to be carrying your most precious cargo.

HEADRESTS THAT PROTECT

The most skilled drivers in the world can't protect themselves from being rear-ended, but now anyone
can dramatically decrease their chances of suffering whiplash. The Santa Fe's standard active front
head restraints move forward and up in a rear impact to protect your neck from overextending.
Given that whiplash is one of the most common vehicle-related injuries and can lead to chronic,
lifelong discomfort, we made these restraints standard on all models. Perhaps as impressive is the
fact that there are no motors or electronics to wear out; the design uses body weight alone to
react to impact forces.

7,316 WELDS, EACH WITH A PURPOSE.

The Santa Fe's top-level crash test ratings, surefooted handling and solidity are
largely the result of its rugged unibody structure. Like essentially every car sold
today, the Santa Fe structure originates from raw sheet metal, but it's the
exacting standards at Hyundai's advanced factory in Montgomery,
Alabama, that give the Santa Fe its strength.

During assembly, the body is welded by robots, then those welds are scrutinized by a separate legion of quality control robots and human inspectors. Over 7,000 welds go into the body of the Santa Fe in total, and to check their integrity, completed bodies are randomly removed from the assembly line and literally torn apart at the seams to ensure the strength our engineers demand.

We realize this might seem obsessive, but the truth is that if we cut corners here, the Santa Fe wouldn't have the
reputation for safety and refinement it currently enjoys.

Strategically placed crumple zones, side-impact door beams, and high-strength steel may not break the laws of
physics, but they can certainly go a long way toward cheating them.

AIRBAGS FOR BOTH ROWS.

The six standard airbags in the Santa Fe protect front-seat passengers from front and side
impacts. Side-curtain airbags extend to the rearmost seats to protect those occupants as well.
And the Occupant Classification System can detect the size of the front-seat passengers and
adjust accordingly. In fact, they're so smart that if no passenger is detected, the
passenger-side airbag won't inflate, reducing repair costs.

PERFORMANCE

ACCELERATION WITHOUT APPARENT EFFORT.

The Santa Fe is available with your choice of either a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder or 3.5-liter V6 engine. Both feature a Variable Intake System and Continuously Variable Valve Timing on the intake camshafts. Translation: more response and efficiency over a broader range of engine speeds.

Vibration-reducing measures ensure the engine remains remarkably refined at high speeds
or when accelerating briskly. The sounds you can hear are the kind you'd associate with an expensive luxury car, and the lack of vibration contributes to the longevity of the engine-something we back with our famed 10-Year/100,000-Mile Powertrain Protection Warranty.

CONTROL FREAKS REJOICE

Most Santa Fe models come with a six-speed automatic transmission that includes a feature most of the
competition lacks: SHIFTRONIC.® Originally developed for sports cars, SHIFTRONIC gives you the option of choosing gears manually when driving on inclines, winding roads, or when preparing to pass. Another rarity:
The six-speed manual transmission is standard on the GLS.

ENGINEERED TO BEND THE LAWS OF PHYSICS.

You might expect a vehicle with the elevated driving position and ground clearance of the
Santa Fe to cry uncle at the first sign of a corner. And the challenge when tuning any vehicle's
suspension is to maintain ride and handling composure regardless of how the vehicle is loaded.
The Santa Fe's firmly damped, long travel suspension tackles both challenges, and moves
fluidly and predictably whatever the situation.

All that composure wouldn't mean much if the tires themselves didn't remain keyed to the surface. Suspension components are reinforced to handle the extra weight of the Santa Fe, and generously sized wheels and tires ? 18 inches on SE and Limited models ? have alignment settings that enthusiasts will recognize as being well suited for safe and confident cornering capability.

ALL AWD IS NOT CREATED EQUAL

When it came time to design the all-wheel drive system in the Santa Fe, we turned to
the experts at BorgWarner.® Their recommendation: the BorgWarner ITM 3e,? an
electromagnetic clutch-type system that sends 95% of the power to the front wheels -
until they encounter a low traction situation, when up to 50% of the power can be
apportioned rearward. The advantage: higher efficiency than systems that are always on.
The fully automatic system also features a rare AWD Lock button that allows you to
send half of the available power to the rear wheels on demand.
